Miss-ing Manners

Who, as a little girl, didn't enjoy having tea parties?  Wearing clothes from my dress-up truck and my mom's shoes, I could spend an afternoon pretending that I was a lady enjoying tea, wearing my "fancy" clothes and the company of my friends.  As I got older, the tea parties stopped and only recently have I asked myself why.

The art of a tea party has been lost on my generation, and to be honest, my mom's generation as well.  Gone are the days of a ladies tea parties, replaced by happy hours, cocktail parties and networking receptions.  My grandmother's generation was truly the last to host these timeless events, with proper china cups, dresses and gloves, with a little formality and a lot of beauty.  It was a way to learn about your fellows and exchange recipes, use good manners and refine the art of conversation.

But somewhere along the way, tea cups were replaced by wine glasses, Chamomile for chardonnay and tea pots for beer pints. What was once a time honored tradition, one that had no time limit, was replaced by the ultimate time cruncher, the happy hour.  So, how can we get back to taking a true interest in our friends and really enjoying the finer moments in our day?

Some days, it's as simple as picking up the phone and calling, rather than sending a text message.  On others, it's mailing a handwritten Thank You note, rather than sending an email.  When you're hosting a party, send out a paper invitation rather than the Evite.  And some days, it's truly as simple as drinking morning coffee or an afternoon tea out of a beautiful cup and matching saucer, rather than a mug.  It's using the "special" dishes on a typical Monday night.

While the tradition has been lost on the generation prior and also on mine, I hope that this is a tradition that I can pick-up in my "grown-up" years, relight the torch and pass on as heritage to my daughter.  I like not only the idea of the tea party, but also the historical perspective of a gathering of women. It's time together to share laughter, ideas and memories, but most important of all, it's a time to listen to the stories that each woman brings to the table of their own history.

Homemade Caramels

Doug loves caramels, so last night I decided to whip up a batch.  They are labor intensive, but always worth it.

A little background on my venture into candy making...

The first time I tried to make caramels, Doug and I had just started dating and we were taking our first trip together.  I thought it would be a nice surprise for him if I make some fresh, homemade caramels to pack in my carry-on bag for the flight.  Again, first time I've ever tried to make candy... and I left the boiling liquid on the stove just a few minutes too long.  I also used condensed milk rather than the required evaporated milk.  It turned out more like toffee, than caramel.

Candy making is all about accuracy and precision.  Learn from my mistakes!  The liquid, which consists of sugar, brown sugar (both of which liquefy with other ingredients and the heat), butter, evaporated milk, heavy cream and corn syrup boils until it hits 250 degrees F/120 degrees C, at which time you remove it from the heat and add vanilla.  (I use a Taylor candy thermometer).  If you allow the liquid to go beyond that, it will start to harden and you'll end up with toffee, as I did the first time!

Here is the recipe I used for the most recent batch of caramels (which turned out just as caramels should, and not at all like toffee!)

Ingredients
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Grease a 12x15 inch pan. (I used a 13x9x1 inch pan, which worked just as well)
  2. In a medium-size pot, combine sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, evaporated milk, whipping cream, and butter. Monitor the heat of the mixture with a candy thermometer while stirring. When the thermometer reaches 250 degrees F (120 degrees C) remove the pot from the heat.
  3. Stir in vanilla. Transfer mixture to the prepared pan and let the mixture cool completely. When cooled cut the Carmel into small squares and wrap them in wax paper for storage.

5 Fall Fashions

While New York City and Washington, DC have their differences, the fashions are often ubiquitous. Having traveled often this Fall to New York and living in Washington, DC here are 5 Fall Fashions that will carry on into the winter.

Boots:

Boots this year are coming in all shapes, sizes and colors, ranging from short booties to Over the Knee.

Black Knit pants:

I love, love, love my black riding pants. I wear them to dinner with heals and during the day with a chunky knit sweater and knee high boots or flats.  They are comfortable, versatile and come in a variety of sizes and price points.

Fur, real and faux:

All can enjoy this trend, with many options for both! There is a plethora of faux fur and real fur choices out there for all to enjoy.

Capes:

This look is great for everyone, just remember to match with a slimmer fitting pant or long, slim skirt to balance out the billowy cape on top.

Jeans:

I've heard people say that they disagree with expensive designer jeans. I couldn't disagree more and this is why: I wear jeans several times a week, let's say 3-4 times per week. When that number is divided by the cost of the jeans, it comes out to roughly 50 cents per wear. When I look at it that way, it makes total sense to purchase a pair that fit well, have stretch where I need it and are going to last. These days, designer jeans come in many washes, sizes and fits, so it's important to find a brand that fit you best. And remember, that a good tailor can be your best friend! They can hem them if the jeans are too long, so decide which height shoe you would like to wear with the jeans first. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Gratitude

What day is better than Thanksgiving, to write a gratitude list? Here are 5 things that I am grateful for today and everyday.

1) My family, friends and loved ones: Being able to share happy times and also having people to lean on when times get tough is truly a blessing.
2) My Health: Other than an occasional cold or feeling worn down, I am generally healthy and for that I am thankful.
3) Enjoying delicious food today and everyday: While I try to eat healthy, it was nice to indulge a little bit today (see yesterday's blog about the dessert - it was truly a treat!) I'm grateful to have food in my refrigerator, thankful for the knowledge of how to cook food and the enjoyment of learning new ways to prepare food!
4) Being a girl: It's fun being a girl and there are just some days that I like dressing up.  Today was one of those days that I enjoyed wearing a skirt, putting on some lipstick and happy that I got a manicure earlier in the week.
5) Coffee: No explanation needed.  Tonight, we drank our coffee, post dinner, out of pretty coffee cups with saucers which always reminds me of being a little girl, having a tea party.  Most mornings, I drink my coffee out of a big mug, so it's nice to break out the "fancy" dishes and enjoy.

What are you thankful for today?

I hope you all enjoyed your holiday and had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Dessert

For Thanksgiving, my family is getting together to celebrate. I look forward to this time of year, as it is the one time that we are all together and there's usually LOTS of delicious food! This year, I am giving a new recipe a try- a Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle, courtesy of Paula Deen, from the Food Network. Here's the recipe:

Ingredients
2 (14-ounce) packages gingerbread mix
1 (5.1-ounce) box cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix
1 (30-ounce) can pumpkin pie filling
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 teaspoon ground cardamom or cinnamon
1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping
1/2 cup gingersnaps, optional

Directions
Bake the gingerbread according to the package directions; cool completely. Meanwhile, prepare the pudding and set aside to cool. Stir the pumpkin pie filling, sugar, and cardamom into the pudding. Crumble 1 batch of gingerbread into the bottom of a large, pretty bowl. Pour 1/2 of the pudding mixture over the gingerbread, then add a layer of whipped topping. Repeat with the remaining gingerbread, pudding, and whipped topping. Sprinkle of the top with crushed gingersnaps, if desired. Refrigerate overnight. Trifle can be layered in a punch bowl.

I'm planning to make the dish today and let it set in the refrigerator overnight, in a pretty, trifle bowl. What are you making this Thanksgiving? Send me your favorite holiday recipe and enjoy the day!

The Best You

Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
Look at the sunny side of everything & make your optimism come true.
Think only of the best, work only for the best & expect only the best.
Forget the mistakes of the past & press on to the greater achievements of the future.
Give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
Live in the faith that the whole world is on your side as long as you are true to the best that is in you!

Boutiques.com

New this week to online Fashionistas is a website called Boutiques.com, brought to you by the mega search engine, Google. I went online to check it out and ended up spending a good amount of time searching and discovering everything the website has to offer.

Their website will help "you find and discover fashion goods through a collection of boutiques curated by taste-makers -- celebrities, stylists, designers, and fashion bloggers. Boutiques uses visual technology to help fashionistas discover and shop their look and creates the opportunity for designers to showcase their collections and latest inspirations online."

First, users can take a quiz, which helps to determine your "style." It guides you through a series of photos, asking which you prefer, also providing a selection for you to "skip" if you do not fancy either of the looks. It told me I was "casual chic" and I found it accurate. It then guides you through the application, asking you to choose dresses, tops, bottoms, shoes and designers that you like and also for those that you do not like.

You can mark clothing, bags and accessories as favorites and save them in your own, personal, online boutique. My most favorite feature the website has to offer is the "Visually Similar Items." You find an article of clothing that you like and the site will offer similar pieces at different price points: brilliant! Clicking on the item takes you right to the website where you can purchase.

If you have some free time, check it out. It's fun to build a virtual closet and find items that suit your Boutique.com appointed style!

I found this email so inspiring, that I wanted to share... Some symptoms of inner Peace

*A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experience

*An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment

*A loss of interest in judging other people

*A loss of interest in judging oneself

*A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others

*A loss of interest in conflict

*Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation

*An increasing tendency to LET things happen rather than to MAKE them happen

Fairy Tale Wedding

I have to admit, that I have been intrigued and borderline obsessed (although quietly obsessed) by the recent engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton.  What she was wearing when she announced her engagement (Issa London, which has sold out almost immediately), the beautiful 18-carat blue sapphire ring (which was given to Princess Diana when Prince Charles proposed in 1981) and the speculation of where the wedding will take place, what dress she'll select (PEOPLE is reporting that the front runner is Phillipa Lepley) and everything else that goes into planning her wedding celebration.  And you had better believe that I will block out the whole day to watch the live televised event! I mean, we watch the Red Carpet events with impunity to see what women are wearing- this is on a whole other fashion & cultural level!

There are two types of little girls (in this respect): the ones who dream of walking down the aisle, wearing the pretty dress and marrying her very own Prince Charming.  On the other side of the nuptial planning spectrum, there are those who see if as an event, another day, a fun celebration of two people coming together.  The dreamer vs. the realist.  I'm a pisces, which means I'm the former, bringing me to the intrigue of the Kate and William engagement, wedding and marriage.

Kate Middleton is marrying into the royal family, living every little girl's dream of one day being a princess, wearing a crown and living a real-life fairy tale. Not only has she found the man who makes her feel like a princess, but one who will give her the official title as well.  While we all can't officially be a princess, we can certainly find a partner who makes us feel like one and treats us like one; but, most importantly, we can take time out of our day, everyday, to do things for ourselves that make us feel like a Princess!

Find your inner Princess and enjoy your weekend!
